So last weekend we packed the drone, grabbed a couple of coffees, and headed south to County Wexford for a bit of history, scenery, and good old-fashioned wandering. If you’re into heritage, sweeping landscapes, and photogenic ruins that practically beg for aerial shots, then this trip was right up our alley.

First Stop: Church of St Mary, Cushinstown & The Parish of Cushinstown

We kicked things off in the peaceful spread of The Parish of Cushinstown. The parish’s main presence on social is:

Our drone got some incredible shots gliding over the rolling fields and framing the Church of St. Mary from angles you just don’t see from the roadside. The parish community there are doing a great job keeping local traditions alive, and (not gonna lie) the early morning light made that old steeple pop.

We made sure to send a heads-up to the parish office before flying – respectful vibes only. 📸

👉 Fun fact: this church is part of one of the largest rural parishes in the Diocese of Ferns and serves several villages around New Ross. parishofcushinstown.ie

Next Up: The Epic Dunbrody Abbey Garden

Then it was on to Dunbrody Abbey – a hauntingly beautiful slice of medieval history. This place is a ruined Cistercian abbey dating all the way back to the 13th century, with towering stonework, cloisters, and vibes that scream drone footage.

The abbey’s grounds, gardens, and surrounding countryside are just chef’s kiss from above. You can almost feel the centuries beneath the drone as you fly over the cloister ruins. It’s one of those spots that rewards slow, smooth gimbal work and golden-hour lighting (which we leaned into hard).

What We Learned (And What You Should Know)

Respect the Space – Both spots are living history. Cushinstown’s parish is active and welcoming, so respectful ground-level behaviour matters. Timing is Everything – Early morning or late afternoon light gives you those cinematic shots without harsh shadows. Tag the Community – It connects your work with real people who care about these places.
